Some of the most joyful memories of my childhood are the times I spent making the two Ravensburger picture puzzles of 2 beautiful castles in France. One of them was a 300 pieces puzzle and the other was a large 1500 pieces puzzle. I made and remade the 300 pieces puzzle dozens of times when I was about 4 to 8 years old and then my parents gave me there 1500 piece puzzle. That was tougher with smaller pieces. It took me some time to get the hang of it and make it but even that I made and remade maybe a dozen times or so when I was about 7 to 15 years. Today, I look back at those hours and days I spent making those two puzzles with much longing and sweet memories.
But most people I have talked to don’t think much about picture puzzles. They know it is an educational toy that can benefit them and their kids but they think it is too difficult or not necessary. That maybe because these people have not had the opportunity of owning and making one or two big puzzles early on in their childhood. Those who don’t care about puzzles may have made one or two small kiddies puzzles but they may not have enjoyed it or maybe no one was there to show them how to put together those lovely 500 or 1000 piece beautiful scenery puzzles of beautiful places, buildings, vehicles etc.
I think there are few people in this world who recognize the value of picture puzzles and find them a source of enjoyment and good pastime or a hobby. So today I came across this UK toy website called the TopToyBox. It is nicely designed and I liked it a lot. But why I mention it here in a article about toys is because that website has got many original articles and tips about the educational value in different kinds of toys like picture puzzles. For example its got this article called, The Hidden Benefits of picture puzzles.
5 Hidden Benefits Of Making Picture Puzzles
Its a great article that list and explains the advantages you can get with picture puzzles. I will list the advantages as points here but go to that website and read the whole article please.
- Picture puzzles help master small hand movements that will lead to kids being able to hold a pencil correctly.
- Hand / eye coordination will come on leaps and bounds in children who do pictures regularly.
- Pictures will improve problem-solving skills and encourage concentration.
- Building a picture from nothing can be a great source of pride for a child. So they are a great way of developing confidence and self-esteem
- Many picture puzzles have pictures that can be used as educational aids, making them doubly good.
So there you have it. Its not only me who finds picture puzzles to be fun, educational and brilliant! Highly recommend you to read the whole article in the TopToyBox Blog. Who will think there are so many benefits from just putting together puzzles!
But wait a second! I only mentioned 5 benefits didn’t I? Guess what’s the 6th benefit you get from making picture puzzles?
The sixth benefit you get from making picture puzzles is you can create sweet memories for the future. I think TopToyBox website had missed that point.
By the way, several times in the past, I have also written here on Toy Truck Toys Blog about good picture puzzles. You might also like to check them out like the one about the world’s largest jigsaw puzzle..
Thanks for the post. I think my 4-year old is just about ready to start attempting more intricate puzzles!
Congratulations Chrystal. Then you have got interesting times ahead of you. I hope you plan to buy your 4 year old many beautiful picture puzzles. They Trust be you will never regret them and they are not very expensive either.
Also I forgot to mention in the article. Some people may think because 1000 or 2000 piece jigsaw puzzles are large they must be expensive. But in reality you can buy about two of them for the price you might pay for a good Tonka toy truck. Case in point the Ravensburger 2000 piece Neuschwanstein Castle puzzle and 1000 piece Windmill Country puzzle both can be bought for around $40. Even though they are cheap like I mentioned above the joy they will bring to your kid and yourself and the memories they will create are priceless.
I love puzzles so much! Great to know there are so many added benefits. Can’t wait until my son is a bit older to be able to do these with him!
Yes, next time we make a puzzle we will be more conscious about its benefits. But don’t focus too much on the benefits otherwise the joy in the task will be lost.
If only my kids didn’t get so frustrated and force pieces to fit where they don’t. LOL
Trying to force puzzle pieces is a very common mistake even adults try to do. I would like to know very much why they do it?
