Hess trucks were born in 1960’s as a result of a marketing practice of gas stations. Back then gas stations used try to encourage people to come to their gas station by offering a souvenir or gift with their fuel purchase. These gift items used to include glassware, mugs, and die-cast toy trucks. The founder of Hess oil company back then decided to used this marketing practice to promote his newly opened chain of Hess gas stations. Hess improved on the practiced and started selling a very “high quality toy” at a affordable price to everyone.

Most of the Hess trucks are exact replica toy vehicle models of the Hess company vehicle fleet. But in 1987 Hess made some changes to the toy trucks they released. Since then Hess have also released some Hess trucks that include some non-fleet vehicles. The same year Hess also introduced a the green and white color scheme you see in Hess toy trucks since then.
